Complesso conventuale di S. Francesco

The convent of San Francesco stands along the road from Rotella to Monte dell’Ascensione, in the territory of Poggio Canoso. It is an early Franciscan hermitage, one of the first such foundations in the region. The complex comprises a church and a convent built around an internal cloister, a typical arrangement for mendicant communities of the period. The Franciscans favoured remote, modest sites for their houses, and this one, set in the quiet of the Marche hills, retains that original austerity. The cloister, with its arcaded walkways, would have served as both a place for contemplation and a practical hub for daily life. Time has worn the stone, and the silence here feels less like emptiness than a slow accumulation of centuries. A place that asks little of the visitor but patience.
