Complesso Badia, Torre e Chiesa

On a rise, set apart from the nearest village, stands a Norman complex of tower and church. The tower is square, rising two storeys: a first tier shaped like a truncated pyramid, then a straight prismatic block visible on the south face. A helical staircase climbs to the upper floors; later additions cling to the east and west elevations. The church is a single nave, rectangular, with a semicircular apse capped by a half-dome narrower than the nave itself. Its double-pitched roof is borne on Palladian trusses. A burial pit lies in the foundations, and the two buttresses on the west and east façades are placed asymmetrically. The portal is of worked tufa, carved in layers. The whole ensemble is quiet, practical, and mildly puzzling, the sort of place where the logic of defence and worship has been altered, room by room, century by century, leaving a stone palimpsest above the fields.
