Collegio Sisto V

Collegio Sisto V is a building of irregular plan, rising over five levels, two of them semi-basements. Its principal façade is of exposed brickwork, while the other fronts are rendered. The structure has been entirely gutted and rebuilt in reinforced concrete, with brick-and-concrete floors and a three-pitch roof of tiles. A large terrace covers the rear.

The fabric is a composite: a core of older date, later enlarged. On the main elevation, pointed and round arches remain visible, now partly blocked. A broad brick staircase, running parallel to the façade, leads to the principal entrance. From the first semi-basement, a door gives onto the upper walkway of Porta Patrizia.

The building underwent a total renovation in 1986, which replaced its load-bearing fabric while preserving these external traces of an earlier architectural language. The result is a palimpsest: a modern interior contained within walls that still hint at a more ancient history.
