The so-called civil forum of ancient Praeneste served as the center of the ancient city and was used across multiple periods. Its archaeological remains today correspond to the Piazza Regina Margherita and lie beneath the Sant'Agapito martire's cathedral. A large Etrusco-Italic temple of the fourth century BCE was situated here as well as a Roman-period basilica where the famous "Nile mosaic" was located in a flanking, apsidal room.
