The so-called Christian Basilica, located in Regio III of ancient Ostia, was discovered by Guido Calza in 1939. The structure likely dates to the fourth and fifth centuries CE. The interpretation of the structure and its remains has proven difficult, resulting in numerous theories that are often at odds with one another. One possibility is that the complex functioned as a xenodochium (a guest house for pilgrims).
