Chiesa-santuario diocesano di Santa Sofia

The Chiesa-Santuario Diocesano di Santa Sofia presents an architectural palimpsest, its long rectangular plan with three naves speaking to centuries of worship. The flanking sacristy rooms yielded masonry remains of an older church during excavations, a tangible reminder of the site's layered history.

A robust modern campanile of red brick rises with Byzantine-inspired cupola, though the church has not escaped the compromises of renovation. Where once were stone quadrifore windows, grey cement replacements now sit, a quiet loss of antique character. Happily, the tripartite pronaos with its sail vaults and the stone portal survive.

Above the main altar, within a neo-Gothic niche, an ancient statue of Saint Sophia presides, depicted as a widow with her three daughters, Fede, Speranza and Carità. Notable is the rare "Mano Acquasantiere" near the left entrance, a singular example of local Albanellese sculpture. The choir and balcony organ overlook the entrance, while two wooden statues, sadly decayed, and assorted sacred furnishings complete the ensemble.
