Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Bartolomeo

The Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Bartolomeo is a Baroque church whose interior, covering some 700 square metres, is a study in vaulted variety. The central nave is divided into four bays by round arches and covered by a lunette barrel vault; the side aisles are cross-vaulted, while the seven lateral chapels, four to the north, three to the south, are topped by barrel vaults. The fourth space on the south side is occupied by the bell tower.

This campanile, some 30 metres high, is built of exposed trachyte ashlar laid in lime mortar. Its square base (roughly 6.20 by 5.30 metres) rises to an octagonal drum, crowned by a ribbed cupola. Notably, the stonework around the tower’s summit features late Gothic decorative carving, anthropomorphic and geometric motifs, an unexpected flourish on a Baroque church.

The façade is asymmetrical: a flat, horizontal-crowned frontispiece with a central tympanum, flanked on the right by a plain wing and on the left by the bell tower. The central portal, architraved and pedimented, is aligned with a rectangular window above; two side doors, each with a matching window, give access to the aisles. The window surrounds are richly worked.
