Chiesa e Convento di S. Domenico

The church is entered down a step, its floor having settled over time. The interior is a longitudinal plan of three naves with a transept of equal height, divided by polychrome plastered brick columns. Two rows of chapels flank the nave. The central and side aisles are vaulted with pointed cross-ribbed vaults, their ribs springing from cubic capitals on the clustered pillars. The central nave ends in a sail-vaulted presbytery and a pentagonal apse covered by a semi-dome. The outer aisles lead to small rectangular chapels as deep as the presbytery. On the right, four chapels and a bell tower complete the row. Most of the twelve side chapels have recently restored ribbed vaults; each contains stuccoes, paintings, sepulchral stones, and altars. The vaults of naves and transept are painted. The stone capitals are carved with sacred and mythological scenes. Light enters through rose windows above the chapel arches, windows in each chapel, and three large windows in the apse. The façade, set on an oblique line because it reused the ancient city walls, is divided into five sections.
