The Chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore is an early Christian church of resolute rectangular plan, divided into three naves with a transept and a polygonal apse. Its vertical structures are a robust mix of brick and masonry, while the horizontal spans deploy a remarkable vocabulary of vaulting: barrel, ribbed cross, hemispherical, and lunette-pavilion. The roof pitches over wooden trusses and a covering of terracotta tiles.

This is a building that speaks in architectural dialects, its core early Christian form overlaid with later medieval and Renaissance interventions, visible in the variety of its vaults. The brickwork and tile roof are typical of the Italian tradition, where local materials and Roman techniques were adapted for the new Christian liturgy. The result is a church that feels less like a single statement and more like a palimpsest, a structure whose history is written not in documents but in stone, brick, and the shifting geometry of its ceilings.
