Chiesa di Santa Maria di Monserrato

This church, built in the Baroque style, presents a compact, double- and triple-height form with a roof of trusses clad in Marseilles tiles and traditional curved tiles. It stands in a district known as Seminario e Ginnasio, above the present cemetery on the road to Agrifoglio. The facade is divided into three sections, reflecting the three aisles within. The central field contains a handsome portal in the Renaissance taste, while above, in place of the customary rose window, there is a simple window. The prospect is crowned by a pediment resting on two pilasters topped with Ionic capitals. The central aisle culminates in a dome over the high altar, whose altarpiece is in the Baroque style. The aisles are marked by rectangular pilasters of stone-and-brick conglomerate, clad in finely worked stucco. This is an unshowy but confident building, its Baroque character expressed in the dome and altar rather than in any theatrical facade.
