Chiesa di Santa Caterina

In the shadow of the cathedral, the Chiesa di Santa Caterina presents itself with a curious blend of modesty and ambition. Its façade is strikingly simple, yet incorporates two small towers, one serving as a campanile, and a painted panel set beneath the tympanum in a purpose-built niche. A broad staircase leads into the single nave, where the interior suddenly opens into the full flourish of Baroque. The vault is dense with stucco work and three frescoes, while the high altar, also Baroque, is executed with notable skill. Two matching side altars face each other across the nave, each set into its own niche. Good wooden benches from the local confraternity survive here too. But all is not well: visible cracks run through the arches, the vault, and the bell-tower. This is a church that wears its grandeur with a certain fragility.
