Chiesa di San Sebastiano

This is a church that keeps its secrets close. Lacking a main façade, the Chiesa di San Sebastiano is absorbed into the surrounding buildings, revealing itself only to those who step inside. The interior is a single nave, its space defined by a barrel vault with lunette windows that let in measured light. Four side chapels, each marked by a round arch, contain niches with statues of saints.

The presbytery is raised, focusing attention on an eighteenth-century altar and the niche above it, where a statue of Saint Sebastian presides. Along the walls, mouldings, friezes, bands, and capitals break up the surface, interspersed with paintings. It is a modest fortress of faith, quietly embedded in the urban fabric, its architecture more concerned with inward devotion than outward display.
