Chiesa di San Carlo

Atika's heritage radar catches the Chiesa di San Carlo, a Baroque church whose central plan is announced by two grand, curving staircases that converge towards a neoclassical portico. Inside, the drama is vertical: immense granite columns on high plinths, topped with Composite capitals, thrust the eye upward toward a dome frescoed by Giussani. The deep niches and side chapels with exquisite altars lighten the volume, while the columns framing the three main archways support pediments nested within the cornice lines at the dome's base. Beyond the apse, a corridor leads to a square sacristy with a pavilion vault and the "camera di San Carlo," a rectangular room reproducing the saint's birthplace, complete with an elegant coffered ceiling. Outside, the building's cruciform plan is softened by curved absidal connections. Smooth ashlar stonework marks the lower level, while the upper storey features windows with frames and pediments, rhythmically divided by Ionic pilasters. The dome is masked by a chamfered drum, lightened by large windows and repeating the pilaster motif.
