Chiesa di S.Nicola

A solid, rectangular tower of limestone blocks and brick, the Chiesa di S.Nicola rises in two distinct orders. Its main façade is lifted slightly by a staircase and parvis, framed by stone corner quoins. A central portal, its lintel and jambs carved with fluted grooves and square low-relief rosettes, is the focal point. It rests on plain half-capitals and is topped by an inscribed frieze and a moulded horizontal pediment. Flanking it are smaller arched doorways, each with a stone plaque above, and these are in turn crowned by two low-arched, splayed windows. The second order repeats this window arrangement, while the façade above curves into scroll-like volutes over the side aisles, capped by a projecting moulded cornice. To the left, reused medieval and Roman sculptural fragments are visible. Inside, three aisles are divided by four bays of round arches on square pillars, their Corinthian half-capitals resting on stone bases, all under a barrel vault.
