Chiesa di S. Martino Vescovo

The Chiesa di S. Martino Vescovo is a three-aisled church of plastered masonry, oriented east-west on a rectangular plan. Its principal façade is a simple gable, enlivened by a significant stone portal above which sits a circular oculus. A two-pitched roof, covered in Marseilles tiles, caps the building. Inside, the central nave is frescoed on the vault, while the side aisles have sail vaults. The slightly raised high altar stands before an apse; a left side chapel extends the plan. Stone stringcourses, pilasters and mouldings articulate the walls. A two-storey campanile rises beside the left side of the façade, topped with an unusual lantern shaped like a bell. Beneath the church, at foundation level, lies a crypt, currently inaccessible. At 16.10 by 18.50 metres and 7.90 metres high, this is a modest but carefully composed ecclesiastical building, its stone details and painted vaults suggesting a parish church that aimed for quiet dignity rather than grandeur.
