In the Renaissance, Italian churches often balanced classical order with local materials and craft. The Chiesa di S. Chiara is a plainspoken example: a nave roofed with wooden trusses, a barrel vault pierced by lunette windows, and a presbytery topped by a dome with a lantern. The apse is a shallow basin, its roof a truncated cone of terracotta tiles. The masonry is continuous, with uniform stone blocks at the corners. Nothing is ornate; the building relies on proportion and the quiet rhythm of its volumes. The lantern lets in a modest shaft of light, the coppi tiles warm in the sun. It is a church that does not shout its purpose, but stands solidly, as if it has always been there, a local answer to a universal ambition.
