Chiesa di S. Caterina

This small church presents a quiet architectural palimpsest, its neoclassical façade marked by a giant order of pilasters supporting a simple entablature and pediment. It faces a little square that connects the main thoroughfare with the portico of San Pietro Martire, where fifteenth-century arches have recently been uncovered. The entrance itself is tucked beneath a late, vaulted portico on columns.

On the northern flank, the only wall left unplastered, you can still see the remains of the secular building on whose foundations the church was erected. Inside, the plan is a simple basilica with three naves and a square apse. Five baroque chapels open along the side aisles; among them, the chapel dedicated to the Beata Panattieri stands out for the completeness of its ensemble. In the passage to the sacristy, five funerary slabs from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries are set into the wall.
