CHIESA DI S.ANNA

The Church of Sant’Anna presents itself as a study in symmetrical composure. Two matching buildings, separated by a wrought-iron gate to the Camposanto with geometric patterns, each offer a porticoed entrance. To the right of the church rises the campanile; below ground lies the original ossuary, its pointed arches a remnant of an earlier construction.

An elevated base, interrupted by four steps, supports paired columns on each side, their Attic bases and Ionic capitals speaking a classical language. Upon one step, the makers left their mark: “Società Cemento dell’Orbetta e De Clemente”. A central round arch, with moulded frame and keystone, sits behind the columns, above which runs a string course. A trabeation of three-banded architrave, smooth frieze, and dentilled cornice completes the order. The roofline is straight over the columns, rising to a pediment at the centre, bearing the epigraph “B. ANNAE DEI GENITRICIS MATRI”. Above the internal door, a lunette preserves an original fresco of Saint Anne with the Virgin and Child and Saint Joachim.
