Chiesa di S. Agata

The parish church of Spelonga, dedicated to Saint Agatha, is a single-nave structure on an elongated rectangular plan. Its load-bearing walls are of local stone, plastered over, and the pitched roof, a simple double slope, is supported by trusses and clad in terracotta tiles. This is the architecture of a village church, built to endure and to gather a community, not to dazzle a cardinal. The Baroque period, in which it was shaped, was an age when even remote parishes felt the urge to modernise their medieval bones, adding a flourish of stucco or a new altarpiece to signal faith and fashion. Here, the effect is sober, the materials honest. The church does not strain for drama; it sits in its landscape, a solid presence among the narrow streets and stone houses of Spelonga. The dedication to Agatha, a Sicilian martyr, is common enough in Italy, but the local devotion gives it weight.
