Chiesa della Spina

The Chiesa della Spina stands in the northern part of Bella, a modest Norman church of simple proportions. Its facade is unadorned, a plain statement of purpose. Inside, the life of the church is concentrated on the right-hand altar, dedicated to the Madonna della Spina, a figure deeply venerated by the local community. Beyond lies the main altar, modern in style and of marble, backed by an unadorned crucifix. The flat wooden ceiling is of little notable value. Frescoes of unknown authorship decorate the side walls. There is no further furniture or significant artwork; the church’s entire focus is the drawing of the Madonna della Spina, which defines its devotional character. This is a place where piety trumps ornament, a small, unassuming structure whose true worth lies in the attachment of its congregation.
