Chiesa della Santissima Annunziata

In Paola’s upper quarter, Cancello, the Chiesa della Santissima Annunziata negotiates a steep site on two levels, straddling the Via Duomo and Via Castello. Two stairways approach it: one rises as a formal staircase to the main entrance, the other curves as a ramp to the side door. A low portico, its arches supporting a tiled roof that curls into volutes above the portal, almost entirely conceals the church from the street, a modest, almost secretive facade for a medieval building.

Within, the plan is a straightforward rectangle of three aisles under cross vaults, but a pointed arch of some ambition marks the threshold to the apse and altar. The side elevations betray a later hand: eighteenth-century windows have been cut into the original simple single-light openings, visible from inside. A second portal on the portico leads to an independent chapel, while on the east prospect a tufa doorway offers another lateral entrance. The church wears its alterations lightly, layers of time held in stone.
