Chiesa della Resurrezione

This small Baroque church, the Chiesa della Resurrezione, is a study in contained drama. The main altar sits flush against the flat back wall of the nave, a focal point flanked by the doorways to two raised choir galleries, their balustrades overlooking the space. On either side of the transept, shallow niches face each other, marking where two side altars once stood; at their feet, two small pits for burials, originally sealed with trapdoors, hint at the church’s former use.

Above, a series of barrel vaults leads the eye to a central dome, rising on four spherical pendentives supported by octagonal pilasters set against the walls. Outside, the façade is divided into three bays by lesenes, intersected at two-thirds height by bold projecting cornices. It is crowned by a curvilinear pediment with a mixed-line profile; beneath it, an elliptical oculus sits above the portal, topped by a capital ornamented with two putto heads. Two empty niches flank the central section, presumably once holding saints. The bell tower rises from the corner of the load-bearing walls, completing this compact, well-ordered composition.
