Chiesa della Madonna del Buon Consiglio

Just outside Trino, on the road to Pontestura, stands the church of the Madonna del Buon Consiglio, originally dedicated to San Defendente. Its rather solid facade is distinguished by a three-arched portico, rising across two orders of pilasters. The lower order incorporates both the portico and windows that light an internal loggia above the entrance; the upper order sits on a high socle, linked by volutes to a central panel framed by paired pilasters. This is a Baroque church, an era when Italian architects often sought dramatic spatial effects through geometry and light. Inside, the plan is a Greek cross, with a curved apse connected to the presbytery’s groin-vaulted ceiling and ribbed half-dome. Short barrel-vaulted sections symmetrically link the presbytery, entrance, and two flat-ended side chapels to a central polygonal dome that dominates the entire space.
