Chiesa dell'Annunziata

This is a Renaissance church of the simplest plan: a single aisle ending in a rounded apse, though the apse is invisible from outside, the custodian’s house having been built hard against it. The high altar, constructed of brick painted to imitate polychrome marble, creates no break between nave and apse; the whole space flows together. Above the altar hangs an Annunciation painting in a carved, gilded frame, probably salvaged from an earlier church on the site that fell into ruin.

The side walls are articulated by painted pilasters, imitating white and cipollino marble, with two more in the apse. Between them are shallow, blind arches, each enclosing a fresco: on the left, a funerary sculpture above the Galimberti coat of arms (quartered: a double-headed eagle and a rooster in saltire); on the right, a painted drapery. Above each arch, a bean-shaped window. A mixed-line cornice, painted to resemble red marble, runs around the impost of the vault. The low barrel vault, divided by painted false ribs, ends in a semicircular dome in three segments. A small sacristy behind the apse, built a few years later, leads to the bell tower and the custodian’s house.
