Chiesa del Carmelo

The Chiesa del Carmelo is a Baroque church of rectangular plan, its entire façade built from pale limestone that gives it a clean, almost stark white appearance. Below, a series of pilasters is divided by the modest entrance, flanked by two columns with Corinthian capitals. A row of triglyphs separates the lower section from the upper, where a mullioned window sits framed by pilasters topped with Ionic capitals. To the left, a small bell tower is reached by a narrow staircase. Both side elevations are braced by hefty buttresses, each with a cordon at the base. On the right side, a raised chapel stands above ground level, decorated with its own pilasters and triglyphs. The church is a composed, symmetrical example of its period, with details drawn from classical vocabulary applied with restraint.
