Chiesa dei Santi Martiri Gratignano e Felino

This is a church of deliberate, austere geometry. Its longitudinal plan, a single nave divided into two great bays, sets up a quiet play of forms: the first arch is round, the second pointed, both covered by ogival vaults. The deep apse, lit by two tall arched windows, is capped by a segmented semi-dome.

The nave’s vertical thrust is disciplined by half-columns with capitals, interrupted by a horizontal trabeation running at mid-height. Below, two short chapels on each side align with the tall windows above. A narrow corridor on the left leads to an irregular sacristy.

The façade is described as ‘tabernacular’: a vertical composition of paired pilasters, broken by the trabeation and echoed by small tabernacles above. A curved pediment bearing the Jesuit crest tops the whole. Stucco decoration, restrained and finely worked, suggests the hand of Ticinese craftsmen. A sober, thoughtful building, where proportion is the true ornament.
