Chiesa Confraternita di San Giuseppe

The Chiesa Confraternita di San Giuseppe is a Renaissance church that plays with space in a characteristically theatrical Italian manner. Its longitudinal plan is animated by projecting bays and deep niches that alternately compress and release the interior volume, drawing the eye towards the presbytery. The high altar, rebuilt in polychrome marble in 1770, is surprisingly restrained: a simple mensa backed by a brick structure clad in coloured tiles, separating the sanctuary from the choir behind. A balustrade of the same marble encloses the presbytery, while the central walls push inward to create a deliberate ‘passage’ between entrance and altar.

Above, an octagonal dome rises on pendentives, with four frescoes of the Evangelists linking the cornice to the springing. A canopy hangs from the vault’s centre, beneath an oculus finely painted with the Assumption of St Joseph. The side altars are modest brick affairs, each set within a niche and flanked by frescoed saints. The overall effect is one of controlled drama: stucco-gilt capitals, a serpentine cornice, and painted archivolts of flowers frame a space that feels both intimate and grand.
