Chapel III - Renunciation of Saint Francis to material goods

On level ground overlooking the lake, this chapel follows a design familiar from its predecessor, begun four years earlier. The square atrium, intended for pilgrims, leads through a wall pierced by three arches into the smaller chamber housing the statuary group. The outer space is capped with an octagonal, ribbed dome; the inner with three cross-vaults, likely of brick. The typology is sober and functional, its architecture serving the narrative rather than competing with it. One stands in the atrium, as pilgrims once did, and moves through the arches into the presence of the scene, a procession of spaces that mirrors a spiritual progression, from the many to the one, from the world of the road to the moment of renunciation. The lake beyond, glimpsed from the threshold, remains the same.
