A Carthusian monastery of almost absurd richness, begun in 1396 as a dynastic mausoleum for the Visconti dukes of Milan and worked on for a century and a half. The facade is a wall of carved and inlaid marble, every surface figured; inside are frescoes, inlaid choir stalls, and the ducal tombs. The irony is that Carthusians are among the most austere of monks, silent and solitary, and this palace of art was built around their silence. It sits in the flat rice fields south of Milan, visible from far off across the paddies.
