Fuscaldo’s medieval core huddles around a hilltop where the castle once stood, now only a few stubborn ruins remain. The old fortified citadel was entered through three gates: Porta di Sotto, still standing; Porta di Sopra; and Porta Verdesca. A watchtower once rose where the public water basin now sits, with two more near what became the grand sea-view piazza (today’s Piazza Indipendenza). The five neighbourhoods within the first ring of walls are modest, but their tufa doorways are worth a pause: squared stone jambs, round-arched voussoirs, quietly fine. Archival records show the mother church existed by 1166, though much rebuilt from the 1500s onward. Scant traces of 13th- and 14th-century gentry houses survive, but the Aragonese period left more: the high arches of the former prison on the Verdesca walls, the control tower at Porta di Juso, and Palazzo Marzano with its tufa portal. In the late 1500s, under Spanish rule, Fuscaldo finally pushed beyond its walls.
