centro storico, montano, Latronico, Latronica (denominazione storica, cit. 1811)

The old centre of Latronico, once called Latronica, is a Norman borgo that has kept its original shape, its first nucleus clustered around the 12th-century church of San Nicola. The quarter known as Capadavutu remains a tight labyrinth of steep lanes and narrow alleys, where humble houses are pressed together in the unadorned architecture of a mountain village. Yet among them stand several historic palazzi of local noble families, distinguished by carved stone or marble portals: Palazzo Gioia on the main square, and Palazzo Arcieri. Other landmarks include the Basilica Pontificia Minore of Sant’Egidio Abate and the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, which was moved to make way for the piazza. The site has been inhabited since Neolithic times, though the first written records appear in the 11th century. Over the centuries, the fief passed through Aragonese, Neapolitan and Jesuit hands, leaving a deep, quiet history in the stone.
