The ancient hill town of Acerenza, known to the Romans as Acheruntia, is a tight knot of stone, built for defence and perched high in the mountains of Basilicata. Its historic core, entirely encircled by walls, is a concentrated maze of narrow lanes where fine palazzi and quiet fountains succeed one another. Many of these noble houses retain internal courtyards, their stone portals and carved coats of arms speaking of old feudal rivalries and allegiances.

The town’s layered history is written in its fabric. The cathedral, a Romanesque-Gothic rebuilding of an eleventh-century original, dominates the skyline, while the eleventh-century church of San Laviero Martire and the eighteenth-century chapel of San Vincenzo offer quieter, contrasting notes. Acerenza was an important Roman stronghold, conquered in 318 BC, and later a strategic centre for the Lombards, the Normans, and the Swabians. It passed through the hands of powerful families, the Durazzo, the Sanseverino, the Ruffo, before being sold to the Ferrilli in the late fifteenth century. A place of deep, layered stone and long memory.
