Carpanzano perches on one of the narrow ridges above the Savuto river valley, following the spine of the hill east to west. The river carves the entire orography here: a system of crests and counter-crests descending towards the water, with the village occupying a small, isolated rise. Beyond its edges, there is little else built until Marzi and Rogliano to the north. The landscape is mountainous, thin with cultivation save for a few olive terraces; the vegetation is mostly scrub, oak and chestnut woods.

The historic core is threaded by a single winding route that changes name a dozen times, Via Roma, Via Savoia, Via Duca d’Aosta, and others, but remains one continuous street. This linear arrangement, typical of Byzantine-era borghi shaped by topography rather than design, gives the village its character: a string of rioni (quarters) named after its principal lanes and squares. Notable among its fabric are Palazzo Micciulli, the former church of San Pietro (now the civic museum), and Palazzo Aragona. The name Carpanzano itself only appears after the 1638 earthquake, which levelled most of the earlier settlement.
