In Nicotera, the old defensive core remains a rare survival: a medieval topographical plan that was never altered, its circuit of walls unbreached until the late eighteenth century. The Norman-period borgo is divided into eight quarters, each named for its protective saint and anchored by a church. Streets run in tight, parallel lines, and one of the original eight gates still stands, Porta Palmentieri, once continuous with the houses and ramparts.

This is no museum piece. Nicotera is a working town of agriculture, fishing, and craft, with a small beach resort nearby at Marina. Its institutions, the Archaeological Museum, the Ruffo Library, the Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art, and the Bishop’s Picture Gallery, sit within a fabric of narrow lanes and stone. The quarter of Palmentieri (now also San Giuseppe) is bounded by old walls and lost gates: Porta Arvale, Porta Prisca d’Abbasso, and Santa Chiara. Here, the medieval street logic still shapes daily life, unhurried and intact.
