San Severo’s historic core sits on the level plain of the Alto Tavoliere, in northern Puglia, a low-rise tangle of irregular, cobbled streets. At 90 metres above sea level, it lies at a natural crossroads: the Gargano to the north-east, the Sub-Appennino to the south, and the open Tavoliere beyond. The modern city radiates outward from this centre, with a southern extension along Via Soccorso, but the old quarter remains defined by its physical edges, natural and man-made, and by the historic neighbourhoods that grew around its cult, productive, and residential functions.

First recorded in 1116 as castellum Sancti Severini, in a charter granting it autonomy from the Benedictines, the settlement was a Norman-era fortified village. Its later history, conquest by Frederick II, who demolished its walls, a brief stay by Charles V, belongs to the archive. What remains visible is the medieval street pattern, the low stone houses, and the sense of a place that has long stood at the junction of routes, watching travellers pass between mountain, coast, and plain.
