Candidoni is a lowland farming centre of probable early medieval origins, its history a litany of lords and seismic ruin. The place follows the fortunes of the nearby Casale di Borrello, passing through a long train of feudal families, Brienne, Sanseverino, Ruffo, Pignatelli, before being absorbed into the administrative sphere of Laureana di Borrello. The earthquakes of February 1783 were utterly destructive, levelling the inhabited centre; further severe shocks in 1905, 1907 and 1908 brought state relief but little structural mercy.
Among its monuments, the parish church stands out. Consecrated to St Nicholas and delivered for worship at the end of the 1700s, it miraculously survived those later seismic events. Today it ranks among the oldest churches in the diocese, a plain survivor in a landscape of repeated collapse, its endurance more remarkable than any architectural flourish.
