centro storico, di pianura, a scacchiera, pianificato, Polistena

In Polistena, the Baroque-era centre tells a story of destruction and deliberate reinvention. The well-preserved historic core, dating largely from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, bears the clear mark of post-earthquake reconstruction: a regular, chessboard street plan, rational and unyielding. This is no accidental medieval tangle; it is a town rebuilt with purpose.

Among the grid, numerous noble courtyard palaces survive, their eighteenth-century craftsmanship evident in stone portals, coats of arms, and crisp pilasters. Many of these elegant façades conceal a pragmatic secret: the casa baraccata technique, a wooden reinforcement system designed to withstand future tremors. The 1783 earthquake was utterly devastating, levelling the town and killing nearly half its population. Subsequent shocks in 1894, 1905, 1907, and 1908 continued to test these structures. Polistena’s architecture is thus a quiet dialogue between Baroque flourish and seismic necessity, beauty braced for the ground to move again.
