Caserta’s historic centre is a study in rational order: wide, straight avenues intersect at right angles, a grid laid out across the plain. This is no medieval tangle but a Baroque vision born of royal ambition. Until 1752, this was a mere hamlet called La Torre. Then came the colossal royal palace, its magnificent park stretching nearly three kilometres across 120 hectares. Designed by Luigi Vanvitelli and finished by his son Carlo, the complex, along with the Carolino aqueduct and the Belvedere of San Leucio, was declared a UNESCO site in 1997. The modern town grew around this showpiece, leaving the older medieval settlement, Casertavecchia, some ten kilometres away. The grid still shapes the centre today, though significant building expansion has filled its bones. History lingered here too: in 1860, skirmishes between Garibaldini and Bourbon soldiers scarred the area; in 1943, the palace housed the Allied supreme command; and in April 1945, the German surrender in Italy was signed within its walls. A place where geometry meets grandeur, and past conflicts echo through serene avenues.
