This is Nicastrello, a tiny borgo that grew not from the slow accretion of centuries, but from a single, deliberate act in 1630. A man named Giannantonio Nicastro carved it from the great Fella forest, on a flat spot once called Stagliata Angitola, for the “diversi forestieri” who came to work the land and woods. The place is a lesson in rural necessity: Salita San Filippo, the one straight street, is lined with two facing rows of low houses. Stone is the chief material, but you also find breste, a sun-dried mix of clay and straw, and timber for external staircases. Most homes had just two rooms, housing ten people, their animals, and their modest possessions. At the street’s end, a small church. The ruins here are of stone and lime; the whole settlement is a clear, unadorned record of a frontier hamlet, built to purpose and then left to time.
