In the Pollino National Park, the medieval fortress of Laino Castello perches on a precarious spur of sand and conglomerate rock, some 450 metres above sea level. The terrain here is brutally steep, gradients exceed 100% in places, and the settlement commands a left-bank position above the Lao River. This is a landscape of dramatic contrasts: the highest point in the comune, Monte La Destra, reaches 1,291 metres, while the river below drops to 175 metres, carving a complex hydrography of streams and torrents that includes the Lao and the Battentiero.

The historic centre, once known by a tangle of names, Lavinium, Languenum, Brutium, sits atop what are essentially ancient fluvio-lacustrine deposits from the Quaternary basin of the Mercure River. The conglomeratic cliff that forms its foundation shows signs of modest, now-quiescent sliding to the southeast, but the town itself remains stable. Scattered rural hamlets blanket the territory, and the Tyrrhenian beaches are surprisingly close. A fortress built on sand and stone, watching over water.
