centro storico, di mezzacosta, costiero, difensivo, Belvedere Marittimo, Belloviderii (denominazione storica, XVIII sec.), Blanda (denominazione originaria, epoca romana)

On a high spur of the Tyrrhenian coast, Belvedere Marittimo’s historic centre follows the land’s contours with a defensive logic that is still legible. The urban fabric, medieval in character, with narrow lanes and raw stone, clusters around the summit, where the castle and rocca once commanded the approaches. Four gates once controlled access: two from the Angevin period, one opening towards the sea and another for those working the fields; two more Aragonese additions, near a now-vanished moat and at the piazza. The building stock is mostly modest, but rows of tower houses retain slits and guard posts, while occasional noble courtyard palaces break the rhythm. The site’s earliest name, Blanda, is Roman; later, a Calabrian scholar of the 16th century derived ‘Belvedere’ from the Latin for a mild, healthful air. The Normans built the first fortress on the ridge, and the settlement’s layered history remains etched in its stone and street plan.
