centro storico, di mezzacosta, collinare, commerciale, Cosenza, Consentia (denominazione storica), Cosentia (denominazione storica-popolare)

The old heart of Cosenza, Consentia to the ancients, is a city built on seven hills, though its historic core settles chiefly upon the Pancrazio and Triglio. It is a place of steep, narrow, twisting lanes, lined with modest houses and grander palazzi, the classic anatomy of a southern Italian hill town. The river Crati is its generative spine; a seventeenth-century Jesuit likened the city to an oval formed by two semicircles, the river as the chord. The centro storico is divided into eighteen quarters, each an autonomous unit shaped by topography, religious boundaries, and the social class of its inhabitants. Fragments of the original Bruzzian stronghold, the Rocca Bretica, survive in the highest quarters. Founded as a political and military centre for the Bruzzii, the settlement grew from that acropolis on the Pancrazio hill, its character still legible in the steep, silent streets.
