On a hillside in Calabria, this medieval borgo once went by the Greek name Kaminion, meaning chimney or furnace, a relic of the potteries that once fired here. The village began as a hamlet of Stilo, tracking that town’s fortunes until the Napoleonic reforms of 1806 made it an independent commune. Earthquakes in 1783 left their mark, damaging the settlement and collapsing homes. Within the historic centre, the baronial Palazzo di San Leonte and the twelfth-century mother church of Santa Maria Assunta stand as anchors of the old fabric. The place retains the quiet, agricultural character of a hilltop settlement, its layout shaped by centuries of seismic interruption and administrative change.
