On a ridge above the Precariti valley, Stignano occupies the sort of natural position that medieval builders coveted. Its houses still cluster defensively, shoulder to shoulder, and the narrow lanes between them are in places too tight for cars. Life centres on Piazza Forzio, which offers a spectacular view over the Ionian coast.

For centuries Stignano was a casale of the County of Stilo, known as Casalis Stenianum. The county was a confederation of autonomous villages, each with its own parliament and laws, a small experiment in local self-government that survived into the Aragonese period. In 1763, Stignano joined Riace and Guardavalle in protesting the election of the mayor, insisting on the right to nominate their own representatives. The earthquake of 1783 caused severe damage. Under the Napoleonic Republic, Championnet’s administrative reforms finally made Stignano an independent commune. The medieval fabric endured, though, and still defines the place.
