The historic centre of Malito strings along the ridge of a hill, running precisely north-south between two religious landmarks: the church of San Martino at one end, and that of the Consolazione at the other. This linear, defensive layout speaks to its origins as one of the many casali, small rural settlements, that once dotted the Cosentino hinterland. Many such borghi were born in the tenth century, when the population of Cosenza fled Saracen raids into the surrounding countryside, and never fully returned.

The main artery is lined with modest houses and, notably, several noble palazzi. Their carved portals, corbels and apotropaic masks betray the hand of skilled stonecutters from nearby Rogliano. Though the centre now wears a distinctly eighteenth- and nineteenth-century aspect, closer inspection reveals medieval traces: pointed arches and rough-hewn stonework. The past is not erased here; it is simply built over, layer upon layer.
