Atop its ridge, the historic centre of Francavilla Angitola is a place where the medieval past is written in stone and street plan. Originally called Crissa, it was refounded as a Norman fortress in the 12th century, and the geographer Al Idrisi described it as a “considerable and populous stronghold”. The urban layout is concentric, probably once enclosed by defensive walls and bastions, with a castle, the Castello del Duca, at its heart. Narrow lanes and terraced housing divide the old quarters: Ruga to the west, and Pendina at the castle’s foot. The itinerary along the ridge, from Piazza Santa Maria degli Angeli to Via Simonetti, offers panoramic views that explain why this site was chosen. After the Normans, the town passed through Byzantine-influenced devotions, then to Angevin feudal families, and later to the powerful Sanseverino and Spanish Hurtado de Mendoza dynasties, who took the title Duke of Francavilla. A fortified settlement shaped by conquerors, its stones hold a long, layered story.
