Cirò, known historically as Ypsicron and originally as Krimisa, is a hilltop borgo in Calabria. Its medieval plan is characteristically irregular: a dense network of narrow alleys that climb and descend without warning, shifting direction abruptly before spilling into small, unexpected squares. This restless layout came about organically, with noble palazzi, churches, and humbler dwellings pressed tightly together, shoulder to shoulder.

Dominating the historic centre is the Castello, built after 1496 for the Carafa family, the new feudal lords. Its trapezoidal form is anchored by four round towers. Most curious is the courtyard, paved not in the castle’s usual stone but in a striking geometric design: a nine-pointed star, concentrically repeated and inscribed within a circle, which has puzzled researchers ever since.

The Carafa also ordered a defensive wall circuit for the entire town, completed by the end of the 15th century. Described in the mid-1800s as high, thick, and reinforced with sloping bastions, little of it remains today, save for the memory of a fortified settlement that once stood its ground on this ridge.
