The Norman centre of Bisaccia, known in dialect as Vesazza, and in medieval documents as Bisacia or Bisaccio, is a hilltop agricultural borgo that first enters the historical record in 1087, with mention of its lord. The Lombards built the Ducal Castle as a defensive rocca; by the sixteenth century it had shed its military role to become the signorial residence of the first Duke of Bisaccia. Its square tower and Renaissance courtyard, with portico and loggia, remain, and the ground floor now houses the Archaeological Museum. South of the castle, on Piazza Duomo, stands the Duomo, rebuilt in 1747 over the ancient cathedral. Not far away is the church of the Nativity of Mary, built by the Normans and destroyed three times by earthquakes. The medieval street plan and the stone fabric of the borgo speak of a settlement that has endured seismic shocks and shifting powers, its layered history still legible in the walls.
