Gerace’s historic core is a tripartite affair, rising in distinct tiers from the low-lying Borgo Maggiore to the fortified Città Alta. The Borgo Maggiore, once enclosed by walls whose ghostly line can still be traced in the battered, shoe-shaped bases of houses along Via Nazionale, was entered through four gates. Above it, the Borgo Minore huddles within the main circuit of walls, bisected by Via Roma, the principal artery climbing toward the upper town, and dignified by a scattering of noble palazzi. At the summit sits the Città Alta, the true heart of the city, ringed by its own defences and dominated by the cathedral and castle rock. The urban fabric is a tangle of irregular streets, though those to the west tend to align with the cathedral’s axis. The houses are mostly single-storey, occasionally two, with internal courtyards and façades embellished by rusticated stone doorways and projecting balconies. Neighbourhood identity here is often bound to a parish or confraternity, a quiet, stone-built hierarchy of place.
