The original core of Balvano coils about a Norman castle, its rock spur still bearing the stumps of two original watchtowers. This is a defensive borgo, a settlement shaped by the need to see and be seen, to hold a high place against an uncertain plain. The castle, later enlarged and altered, remains the symbolic and physical hinge of the old town.

Down below, at its foot, the historic centre holds the palaces of the local gentry: Palazzo Laspro on Via Umberto I, and, around Piazza Cavour, the Tirico, Lenzi and Pacelli buildings. The churches are older still. The mother church, Santa Maria Assunta, was built in 1236, though the earthquakes of 1694 and 1980 left little of the original fabric. The most representative sacred building is the conventual complex of Sant'Antonio da Padova.

First cited in a mid-12th-century document, Balvano was founded in Lombard times and became a county under the Normans, when the Balbano family held great prestige. After their line died out in the early 1200s, it passed through many hands: the Chevreuse, the Alemania, the Caracciolo of Sicignano, the Giovine. A small, layered place, built and rebuilt on the same stubborn rock.
